B s And D s `` And `` D S - 1815 Words

When I was about five or six years old, the adults around me noticed that I did not write normally. I failed to differentiate between lowercase â€Å"b’s† and â€Å"d’s.† I wrote interchangeably from left to right and from right to left. My handwriting was close to illegible. When I was twenty-five, I was nominated for an Emmy in comedy writing because I do not write normally. Now, as a teacher, I recognize how flexible, how particular, my teachers were in their teaching—in what they assessed, and when they intervened or corrected me. I had teachers who were able, empowered, inclined and, ultimately, trusted to consider what my particular strengths and weaknesses meant in the context of me; what not writing normally meant in the context of how I talked about dinosaurs, made up stories about blocks, and told jokes. There is a privilege in that kind of education, in being specifically considered, not just with expertise, but also with genuine interest. It was a privilege to have never felt lacking because I needed something different. I have spent most of my teaching career at ELLIS Preparatory Academy, a small high school in the South Bronx.
